Dragunas Klaipeda – First winner of BCL

The inaugural tournament of Baltic Challenge League ended with Dragunas Klaipeda’s success. The winner of the regular season held its ground also in the Final Four, defeating Tenax Dobele in the final match by 28-22 (16-8).

First half belonged completely to Dragunas. After opening ten minutes the score was 6-3, but the hosts won the next ten minutes by incredible 7-0 and took a 13-3 lead, winning the first half by 16-8. It seemed the match is decided, but Latvian champions did not feel the same way.

Tenax started slowly, but steadily to climb back into the game and at best – after 43 minutes – had cut the deficit to two goals, trailing only by 19-17. Dragunas realized the “wake-up call” and two goals each from Gediminas Vaitkus and Karolis Stropus restored a more comfortable lead.

Dragunas eventually secured a 28-22 win and were crowned as the first ever champions of Baltic Challenge League! Tenax was awarded silver-medals and few hours earlier Viljandi HC had secured third place. Karolis Stropus was Dragunas’ best with 7 goals with Gediminas Vaitkus adding 6 – same amount as Tenax’s best scorer Oskars Arajs. Final match Most Valuable Player award went to Dragunas’ goalkeeper Aistis Pažemeckas.
