EHF EURO 2014: Belarus, Austria, Russia, Macedonia to Denmark, Slovenian “Heroteam” stays home

The final group matches played on Sunday gave the final travellers to the European Championship 2014 in Denmark. Among them – Belarus, Austria, Russia and Macedonia, while Slovenians will be staying at home, despite the great potential of this generation.

Macedonia vs. Portugal 26:19 (14:10)

Led by Kiril Lazarov throughout the whole game and in-form Borko Ristovski in the second half, Macedonians are going to try to better their placement from Serbia EC, when they finished 5th. In the direct duel against Portugal which decided which team will travel to Denmark, Portugal managed to get as close as 18:17 with 15 minutes to go, however the final 15 minutes belonged to the hosts – supported by 6500 fans. In the end Macedonia celebrated bigger than deserved win with 26:19.

Slovenia vs. Belarus 33:35 (17:18)

The “Heroteam” will not see the European Championship in Denmark 2013. Despite the brilliant showing of this Slovenian generation at the World Championship 2013, the final decisive game in Ljubljana against Belarus proved disastrous for Boris Denic’s team. In a very tense game in which both sides exchanged lead, the Belarussians had superb Rutenka and Pukhousky, while on goal Charapenka shined, which proved decisive for the final win. Nenad Bilbija had 7 goals for Slovenia, but his performance was not enough. Belarus will see their 2nd European Championship.

Austria vs. Russia 30:25 (12:12)

Austria defeat Russia, but both teams can celebrate. Austria qualifies for the European Championship in Denmark, while Russia is the third-best ranked team from all groups – and are therefore to be playing at the Denmark 2014 Championship.
