Group D: Another Polish thriller in Qatar – Denmark and Germany tie

After a thrilling match Poland took a 26:25 victory over Russia.

The beginning of the game belong to the Russian team. Poland lost Krzysztof Lijewski already in 3. minute due to a knee injury and his alternate Rojewski didn’t take the best start. Biegler called for a time out already after 5 minutes of the game but it got even worse for Poland. Solid Russian defence and rivals’ mistakes allowed Russia to take 5:1 lead in 9. minute. Polish powerlessness was broken by Rojewski who started making up for his previous mistakes – his two goals and one steal plus Wyszomirski in goal changed the result from 5:1 to 5:4 for Russia in 2 minutes or so. Right after that Poles lost Grabarczyk for 2 minutes but Wyszomirski kept saving throw after throw and in 16. minutes Bartosz Jurecki equalized at 6:6. However, Russia with a very good Bogdanov in goal held on to their one-goal-edge. This situation kept going on this way until the end of the half and the Russian team left the court leading 13:12.

The one-goal edge was being kept still for the first 7 minutes of the second half and then Poland, playing short-handed, took their first lead (17:16). But it only motivated Russia – they scored 3 goals in a row and made Poland lose 17:19. Both teams surged back and forth. With 8 minutes to go, the situation of Russia started looking very good when they scored for 24:21. Despite things like missed or disallowed goals, Poland came back to game. In 57. minute Michał Jurecki equalized at 24:24. Szmal started his performance, Bielecki started hitting the net after his bungled beginning. 2 minutes before the final whistle Egor Evdokimov got sent off for 2 minutes. Poland made use of this advantage and Wiśniewski scored the winning goal. Russia still had time to equalize, they entered a libero and had a perfect chance to score but Szmal denied Atman. Poles kept the ball almost until the final whistle and won by one.
