History! Russia will miss WC for the first time!

Russian handball going down year by year and new confirmation of that is elimination from WC in qualification round against Romania (32:37) in front of 2500 domestic spectators. Russia won the first game in Romania with 32:28. That will be first time from 1961 (First World Championships) that Russia will not participate at WC! Seventeen tournaments, three times as a World Champion, at last WC in Croatia were 16th.

Just ten years before, Russia was Olympic Champion in Sydney OG.

On the bench is still legendary, Vladimir Maximov. With French coach Cloud Onesta, he is only one ih handball world, who won as a coach World, European and Olympic gold medal. What Onesta doesn’t have is Olympic Gold as a player, what Maximov had from Montreal 1976, when he was a captain of gold Soviet Union team.

Do not be all that bad, Russian champion, Cehovski Medvedi played at EHF CL Final Four in Koln as a biggest surprise of most quality clubs competition. They finished fourth after lost against Barcelona and Ciudad Real, but they won one more place for Russia in Champions League. Second team in next season will be Neva from Sankt Petersburg, as a national vice-champion.
