Poland win tight battle ove Argentina

After a very tight 60 minutes Poland took their first 2 points by beating Argentina 24:23. Poland took the better start; a serie of fastbreaks and steals ended up with a first goal for them. Argentina managed to draw at 3:3 in 6. minute but Poland got away and gained 3-goal-lead in 11. minute (7:4). The European team maintained a 1- or 2-goal-edge but its numerous errors allowed Argentina to come from behind. Both teams played carelessly but Argentina made use of their opponents mistakes; the end of the first half was a bad period for Poland in attack. Also right before the halftime whistle Diego Simonet and Michał Jurecki had a little quarrel but it went unpunished and the game could be continued. In the last minute Federico Fernández gave his team 12:11 lead and goalkeeper Matías Schulz denied the Poles an equalizer.

The second half didn’t begin well for Argentina as they were rejected by Szmal, made an attaking foul and lost Diego Simonet for 2 minutes for the second time. Despite that, Poland failed to get back on the lead. They seemed to play too fast in attack and Argentina knew how to break through their defence. But a little improvement of their performance gave Poland the lead again in 45. minute (18:17). The teams surged back and forth; with 6 minutes to go, Argentina lost Diego Simonet who got his third 2-minute-suspension after fouling Michał Jurecki. Poland also got a penalty throw which was scored by Bartosz Jurecki and the gap increased to 2 goals. Polish goal was protected by Szmal the whole game, and despite he managed to save throws before, his role turned out to be crucial in the last minutes. Argentina got a big chance to catch up having a penalty throw and being in a double powerplay when Syprzak and Orzechowski got sent off for two minutes in 58. minute. However, Szmal saved that penalty throw and in the last minute Michał Jurecki sealed the deal scoring at 24:21. Argentinians managed to score only two more goals and the final result was 24:23 for Poland.
