Portuguese historical achievement: “They didn’t surprise me”

Portugal made the biggest result in handball history at Men’s EHF EURO 2020. The team of Paulo Pereira will play for the fifth place, which all Portuguese handball fans could only dream about only 10 days ago. The last appearance of Portugal at big events was the 15th place at Men’s EHF EURO 2006 in Switzerland. The biggest achievement is the 7th place at Men’s EHF EURO 2000 in Croatia.

One of the coaches who knows situation in Portuguese handball, where he won seven titles in a row with FC Porto Sofarma, Serbian Ljubomir Obradovic, isn’t surprised with the performance of the Portuguese team.

  • I am not surprised, I know players, many of them I coached. I know their qualities and potential. Porto are playing good at EHF Champions League, they are stabil team with good results. If you see, this is more or less, Porto’s line-up with some changes. They got adequate experience on international level and they are mature. You have three Cuban guys in that selection – Quintana, Salinas and Borges. I need time to convince them that they are good players. Now, they are showing this to the whole Europe – said Obradovic for Balkan-Handball.com.
