Hungary: Pick Szeged finish 2012 unbeaten in the Hungarian league

Pick Szeged travelled to southwest for the final round of 2012 to meet 9th place Pécs.  The two main pillars of the local team’s attack are Bence Szöllősi, current topscorer of the Hungarian League with left wing and third best goalscorer István Szepesi. These two players have scored almost half of Pécs’s goals. Young Szeged pivot Péter Grünfelder who is on loan to Pécs definitely wanted to prove himself to the Pick managers.

Before the match the local team’s executives presented gifts to four of Szeged’s players: Vadkerti, Mikler, Zubai and serbian international Prodanovic who all participated at the London Olympics. This fair gesture and the fact that Zubai was recently selected best sportsman of the year in Szeged ensured that the match would start in a festive mood. Szeged had two injured players: Swedish superstar Jonas Larholm and József Czina.

Pick started the match well, however the local team kept the pace until the 15. minute (7-8). The guests then changed to a higher gear and achieved a comfortable lead by the end of the first half (13-18). In the second half the difference only got bigger with Fero Sulc (6 goals) leading the way.  Gábor Ancsin (5 goals) and  Antonio Pribanic (6 goals) were the other key players in Szeged’s  easy victory (25-34).

Pick Szeged finsihed the year undefeated in the Hungarian League. Members of the Hungarian national team will soon start preparing for the coming World Championship in Spain while the others may enjoy a long Christmas holiday until 7. January.

We from Szeged wish all Handball-Planet readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
