Thomas Arnoldsen Takes Indefinite Break to Focus on Health and ADHD Treatment

The Danish national team player is once again sidelined for an indefinite period due to the illness that has, for nearly two seasons, prevented him from playing handball full-time. In Aalborg statement, he explains and elaborates on the situation.

Thomas Arnoldsen joined Aalborg Håndbold in the summer of 2023 from Skanderborg-AGF Håndbold, and shortly after was signed off due to physical and mental fatigue.

“In the following six months, I underwent medical evaluation and was diagnosed with ADHD. Through the club’s medical team and affiliated resources, I was also given a number of tools to manage it,” says Thomas Arnoldsen.

“Even though I felt much better and was able to play handball again, the symptoms never fully disappeared and gradually worsened again this season. That’s why I began medication for my ADHD in the spring, followed by an adjustment period, which meant I had to refrain from both training and matches.”

“The adjustment to the medication is still ongoing, and I continue to experience symptoms, which means that at the moment I’m unable to engage in the sport I love so much.”

“Therefore, together with the club, I’ve decided to take a break for a period so we can fully stabilize the situation, and I can once again be part of the team and contribute on the court. Fortunately, things are improving, and I see this as a sideways step on my path forward,” Arnoldsen explains further.

Aalborg Håndbold’s director, Jan Larsen, adds:

“It’s naturally a frustrating and unfortunate situation for Thomas, but one we have great respect for and that must be handled properly and with the necessary time.”

“As a club, we’re doing everything we can—both with the medical resources we have available day to day, and the external expertise connected to Thomas—so that together we can hopefully turn things around. This includes support from performance psychology consultant Martin Langagergaard, who has been working with Thomas since he joined the club.”

“At this moment, we cannot say when we expect Thomas to return to the court, but that’s not the most important thing. Our primary focus right now is to provide all the help we can to resolve Thomas’s challenges.”
