Franjo Bobinac Enters Race for IHF Presidency

Former president of the Slovenian Handball Federation and current head of the Slovenian Olympic Committee – Franjo Bobinac – is entering the race for president of the International Handball Federation (IHF). The successful businessman, who first entered handball as a representative of sponsor Gorenje, will face German candidate Gerd Butzeck, nominated by his national federation, and most likely also Hassan Moustafa, the Egyptian who has led the world handball organization since 2000.
The new IHF president – together with several other governing bodies – will be elected at the congress in Cairo from December 19 to 22, according to the Slovenian Handball Federation.
Bobinac explained his decision with the following words:
“This is a great recognition for Slovenian sport, because it means we are working properly and with quality. In recent weeks, I have received numerous initiatives from different parts of the world – from Europe to other continents – to enter the candidacy for president of the International Handball Federation, which is an important part of the international Olympic family. In these initiatives I felt great support, encouragement, and confidence that handball at the global level is facing changes that need to be carried out. Many have recognized in me the person who could lead and implement these changes. This is a great recognition for Slovenian sport, because it means we are working correctly and well. After thorough consideration, I decided to accept the challenge and run as a candidate. Regardless of the candidacy and how the elections will end, I emphasize that I will continue to remain committed to Olympism and to leading the Slovenian Olympic Committee. I deeply believe in Olympic values and therefore want, at the head of the Slovenian Olympic Committee, together with all stakeholders, to continue the development of the successful story of Slovenian sport in the next mandate as well. With an important role in the International Handball Federation, Slovenia could further strengthen its Olympic position. I am entering the candidacy for president of the International Handball Federation with respect for all those who invest their energy, passion, and knowledge in sport and handball. I am convinced that through strong cooperation of federations from all continents, we can develop handball into a truly global sport and further strengthen its Olympic status. By connecting and collaborating, we also create a better world through sport.”
