Börge Lund becomes new THW Kiel coach

Börge Lund, former world-class centre back and since 2020 coach of Norwegian top club Elverum Handball, will coach THW Kiel in the 2026/2027 season, which officially begins on 1 July. The 47-year-old, who wore the Zebras’ jersey from 2007 to 2010 and spent the most successful period of his career on the Baltic coast, has now signed a contract until 30 June 2028.
“Börge has done excellent work in Elverum”
The Zebras’ search for a coach has been successfully completed: after the summer break, Börge Lund will take over the important position on the Zebras’ sideline. “Börge is exactly the right man for our new beginning with our newly formed team,” says Viktor Szilagyi, managing director of THW Kiel. “In recent years, he has done excellent work in Elverum, shaping young and experienced players into a powerful team. He has also helped players — including our Eric Johansson — in their personal development.”
Szilagyi emphasizes that the Norwegian is also a perfect fit for Kiel’s requirements beyond the sporting aspect: “He knows the club, the city, the league. He understands what is special about working for a club like THW Kiel in the strongest league in the world. That, his cooperation with assistant coach Christian Sprenger, and his great experience will make the start easier for him and for us.”
“I feel the responsibility and the trust”
With the Norwegian, Kiel have appointed a coach who already has considerable international experience and who will need hardly any time to settle in. “It almost feels like coming home,” Börge Lund smiles. “My years in Kiel were the highlights of my playing career. THW Kiel was and still is the greatest club in the world for me. At the moment, perhaps the club is taking a breath before attacking again. Being able to be part of this new beginning with exciting personalities and to bring in my philosophy is a huge honour and a great task. Of course, I feel the responsibility, but above all I feel the trust that everyone at THW Kiel has placed in me and in my work.”
Börge Lund is a “strong, experienced handball personality”
That also includes the supervisory board, as its chairman Kai Kruse stresses: “We are pleased that our management was able to fill the important position of head coach so quickly with a strong, experienced handball personality. We are convinced that Börge Lund and the new impulses connected with his appointment will benefit our process of a fresh start, and we look optimistically towards the tasks that lie ahead for our exciting new team.”
About Börge Lund
Börge Lund was born on 13 March 1979 in Bodø. He arrived in the strongest league in the world as a 27-year-old player and, during his seven years in Germany, wore the jerseys of HSG Nordhorn, Rhein-Neckar Löwen, Füchse Berlin and THW Kiel.
His three years on the Baltic coast were the most successful of his career: between 2007 and 2010, Lund scored 155 goals in 137 appearances for the Zebras. With THW Kiel, the centre back won three German championships, the DHB Cup twice, the Super Cup, the Champions Trophy in 2007 and the Champions League in 2010.
Lund ended his playing career at his home club Bodø HK, with whom he sensationally won the Norwegian Cup in 2015. The 1.96-metre-tall player made 216 appearances for the Norwegian national team, scoring 390 goals. He won two World Championship silver medals with Norway.
His coaching career also began with the national team: from 2017 to 2021, Börge Lund served as assistant coach of Norway, and in 2020 he also took over as head coach of Elverum Handball. In his very first year as a club coach, he won his first national title with the Norwegian Cup triumph, followed by Norwegian championship titles in 2021 and 2022.
