CSODA! Hungarian word for MIRACLE is the perfect one to explain what happened in the eighth-final battle with Denmark in Albertville! After poor Preliminary Round and three defeats against European teams, Hungarians sent out of the tournament one of the biggest favorites – reigning Olympic champions – Denmark 27:25 (13:12).
Team led by Spanish coach Xavi Sabate celebrated one of the biggest win in the last decade and repeated success from World Championship 2013, when Hungary played also at quarter-final! Telekom Veszprem goalie Roland Mikler was outstanding with 15 saves, five more than his TOP class rival on other side Niklas Landin.
Winning team had domination during most of the match. Ima Jamali netted for 21:17 in 45th minute, but handball world have seen tight finish in which Danish squad had also chance to turnover result. Match winner was Gabor Csaszar, experienced playmaker, who netted two goals for Hungarians in the last 65 seconds of the clash.
Mate Lekai was TOP scorer with six goals, while on the other side eight of Mikkel Hansen weren’t enough for Danes to avoid disaster.
