Omar Ingi Magnusson to stay at SC Magdeburg

Handball Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg can count on Omar Ingi Magnusson for the long term. The exceptional Icelandic handball player has extended his contract—originally set to run until summer 2026—by two more years, now lasting until June 30, 2028.

“We are very pleased that we managed to tie Omar to SC Magdeburg for several more years. With his outstanding qualities, he fits perfectly into our system. Together with Albin Lagergren, we feel very well positioned on the right backcourt for the coming seasons,” said head coach Bennet Wiegert about the contract extension of the 28-year-old left-hander. Magnusson has been wearing the SCM jersey since 2020 and has already scored 102 goals for the German champions and cup winners this season.

Magnusson joined Magdeburg in the summer of 2020 from Danish top club Aalborg Håndbold and already boasts an impressive collection of titles with the Green-Reds. In 2021, he won the EHF European League and the IHF Super Globe with SCM, and he became the Bundesliga’s top scorer in his debut season in Germany. In 2022, he was crowned German champion with SC Magdeburg and was named the Bundesliga’s best player, also defending the IHF Super Globe title with Magdeburg. In 2023, the club won the EHF Champions League, although Magnusson was sidelined in the final due to injury. That same year, he claimed his third consecutive IHF Super Globe title. Most recently, he helped secure the domestic double with a championship and cup win. “My family and I feel very much at home in Magdeburg. I play for a fantastic club with incredible fans. On the sporting side, I want to help SCM win more titles in the coming years,” said the backcourt player regarding his contract extension.
