Bernabéu Considered as Potential Venue for EHF EURO 2028 Opening Match

Preparations for the Men’s EHF EURO 2028 are gaining momentum across Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland, with one idea standing out as a potential game-changer for the sport: hosting a handball match at Madrid’s legendary Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

During recent site visits in Spain and Portugal, representatives from the European Handball Federation (EHF) inspected several potential venues, including the newly renovated Bernabéu – one of the most advanced and iconic stadiums in world sport.

A Venue That Could Redefine Handball

With its retractable roof, modern infrastructure, and flexible design, the Bernabéu has evolved into a true multi-purpose arena capable of hosting major international events. If selected, the stadium could provide an unprecedented stage for the opening match of EHF EURO 2028 — bringing handball into a new era of visibility and global appeal.

Breaking New Ground

Hosting a match at the Bernabéu would not only symbolize the sport’s ambition but could also shatter existing attendance records. The current benchmark, set in Dusseldorf in 2024 with over 53,586 fans at Men’s EHF EURO 2025 opener, could be surpassed by a significant margin — as Bernabeu has 80,000+ capacity.

The joint organization between Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland for the 2028 tournament already promises innovation and scale. The potential inclusion of Madrid’s Bernabéu would add a unique, world-class dimension to the event — connecting handball with the emotion and grandeur traditionally reserved for football’s biggest occasions.
