New Balkan league starts from the season 2026/2027

New regional league consisted of Balkan teams are on the way. Representatives of Serbian, Macedonian and Montenegrian federations had a meeting in Belgrade with an idea to start both competitions (men’s and women’s) from next September.
The first option is to see 4 teams from Serbia and North Macedonia and two from Montenegro in Men’s league (10 in total).

Representatives of the handball federations of Serbia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro held a joint meeting, with the main topic being the formation of regional leagues in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
During the meeting, various competition formats were discussed, including several league system models, with the aim of improving the quality of handball, increasing competitiveness, and strengthening regional cooperation.
All participants expressed a firm and united position that the joint leagues should begin as early as September this year, with a high level of organization and professional standards.
The final decision on the competition format will be made at the next meeting, planned for April in Skopje, when all key details will be aligned and the final league model defined. Representatives of the clubs will also be invited to that meeting so they can take an active part in the decision-making process.
The handball federations will continue their intensive communication and cooperation in order to implement this important project for the development of handball in the region.
