A Crazy Berlin Story: Füchse Trophy Turns Up in Club Cellar

Circus Medrano in the middle of Berlin. The end of last year was marked by the news that Füchse Berlin’s championship trophy had disappeared from the club’s offices. An investigation was launched, the police got involved, suspects were identified, but the trophy was nowhere to be found. It was even suspected that it had been melted down.

Twist! The trophy was found in the basement of the club’s headquarters.

Employees of Füchse Berlin discovered it hidden behind cardboard boxes in the basement of the main building at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. It is believed the perpetrators hid it there intending to collect it later.

“We informed the police immediately,” Füchse Berlin director Bob Hanning told handball-world.

The story becomes even more bizarre considering that, when the suspects were arrested in January, police seized a melted silver bar and a melting furnace. Because of that, the Handball Bundesliga had already begun preparations to produce a new trophy.

“The championship trophy will exist again — and we certainly won’t be making it out of cardboard,” HBL chief executive Frank Bohmann had said earlier. Still, the order for a new trophy was withdrawn at the last moment.
