Gummersbach extends Sigurdsson’s contract until 2029
VfL Gummersbach have made a strong statement regarding their sporting future by extending the contract of head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson ahead of schedule. The Icelandic coach, whose previous deal was set to run until the summer of 2027, has signed a two-year extension and will now remain with the club until 2029.
Considering the significant interest in Sigurdsson from other clubs, the extension also represents a clear commitment from the Icelandic coach to VfL Gummersbach and the path the club has taken over the past several years.
“This contract extension is a real statement for us,” said VfL Managing Director Christoph Schindler. “Goggi has built an outstanding reputation with his work, far beyond Gummersbach, and of course we know that there is significant interest in him. That makes his decision to continue our journey together even more valuable.”
Sigurdsson took over as head coach in the summer of 2020, immediately after ending his professional playing career, and guided Gummersbach back to the German Bundesliga in 2022. Following that achievement, he was named Coach of the Season in the 2. Bundesliga.
After leading the club to tenth place in its first Bundesliga season following promotion, Sigurdsson was also named Coach of the Season in Germany’s top division. The Icelandic coach received the award again for the 2025/26 campaign, further establishing himself as one of the most highly regarded coaches in the Bundesliga.
“Goggi has played a decisive role in the sporting development of our club over the past six years,” Schindler added. “He stands for professionalism, passion and extremely high standards in daily work. At the same time, he fully identifies with VfL, our team and our philosophy. Being able to continue this cooperation on a long-term basis gives us great planning security and sends an important signal both internally and externally.”
Sigurdsson also underlined his strong connection with the club.
“I am very happy and grateful for the trust the club has placed in me. We have built a lot together over the past few years, but I still feel that our journey is far from over,” said the 47-year-old.
“The cooperation with Christoph, my coaching staff, the team and everyone at the club is based on great trust. My family and I feel at home in Gummersbach. VfL has long since become much more than just an employer for me. That is why I am very much looking forward to continuing to be part of this development in the years ahead.”
By extending Sigurdsson’s contract until 2029, VfL Gummersbach have secured long-term stability in the head-coach position while also underlining the club’s sporting ambitions.
