Aalborg sign Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu on four-year deal
The Faroese playmaker will join Aalborg Håndbold in the summer of 2027 on a free transfer from German giants THW Kiel.
Aalborg Håndbold have announced the signing of 24-year-old Faroese playmaker Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu on a four-year contract.
Á Skipagøtu began his professional career in his homeland with H71 in the 2019/20 season before moving to Swedish side IK Sävehof in the summer of 2020. Three years later, he joined German powerhouse THW Kiel, where he will remain until his move to the reigning Danish champions in the summer of 2027.
“With Elias in the squad, we are adding a world-class player who in recent seasons has been a key figure for THW Kiel and one of the driving forces behind the success story of the Faroese national team. His technique, game intelligence and one-on-one ability are among his many strengths, and despite his young age he has repeatedly shown that he is not afraid to take responsibility in decisive moments,” said Aalborg Håndbold team manager Martin Larsen.
“We are therefore extremely excited to see him in the red jersey. Together with our other backcourt players, he will become part of a very strong group that we hope can take us even closer to our stated goal of winning the EHF Champions League,” Larsen added.
Á Skipagøtu said that Aalborg was the logical next step in his career.
“Aalborg are without doubt the biggest and best-run club in the Nordic region, which naturally made the opportunity very attractive to me. That is why they were also my first priority when the possibility of a transfer emerged.
“The ambition to reach the very top of European handball is also very appealing to me, so I am looking forward to becoming part of an exciting squad with many other top players and hopefully contributing to bringing more titles to the club,” said á Skipagøtu.
The Faroese star has so far made 31 official appearances for his national team.
In 2024, he was named IHF Young Male Player of the Year. He won the German Cup with THW Kiel in 2025 and was also named Bundesliga Player of the Month in September of the same year.
During the 2025/26 season, á Skipagøtu was THW Kiel’s top scorer with 150 goals in 22 Bundesliga matches and was selected in the Bundesliga Team of the Season as the league’s best playmaker.
