IHF considering changes to 7-on-6 rule – experiment possible in 2027

One of the tactical concepts that has had a major impact on modern handball could soon be reconsidered. The IHF is discussing possible changes to the current 7-on-6 rule, including restrictions or even abandoning the system in its present form, according to French outlet HandNews.fr.

The topic has reportedly become part of the wider discussion about the future development of handball rules. Philippe Bana, president of the French Handball Federation and first vice-president of the IHF, confirmed that the 7-on-6 concept is currently under debate.

According to HandNews.fr, the IHF Council is expected to discuss the issue in January, including the possibility of testing a modified version of the rule at the 2027 Youth and Junior World Championships.

Coaches and handball experts also discussed the subject during meetings held in Cairo around the IHF Club World Championship. France head coach Talant Dujshebaev was among those involved in the discussions.

One of the main concerns is the effect that 7-on-6 has on two-minute suspensions. By replacing the goalkeeper with an additional court player, a team playing short-handed can still attack with six players, reducing part of the numerical advantage traditionally created by a suspension.

Another element being questioned is the increasing number of situations involving an empty goal, something that has become an important tactical feature of top-level handball in recent years.

No final decision has been made and the IHF appears to favour an experimental approach before considering any permanent rule change at senior level.

If the proposal receives approval, 2027 could therefore mark the beginning of a major rethink of the 7-on-6 system and one of the most significant tactical rule changes in modern handball.
