EHF stops “rainbow” armband

The EHF EURO Tournament Management released a decision on Thursday, 14 January relating to team clothing at the EHF EURO 2016 in Poland and specifically to the wearing of the captain’s armband. The issue had been raised in the media by the Swedish captain, Tobias Karlsson, ahead of the start of the event given his wish to wear a specific rainbow-coloured armband in support of equality and rights of all people.

On the specific question of the colour of the armband, the EHF Tournament Management made it clear that the captain’s band is regarded as a part of the playing kit of a team and therefore has to match the appearance of the team kit. It should be in one colour or colours of that nation.

Commenting on the decision, Jean Brihault, the EHF President, said: “We believe strongly at the EHF that the handball court is a place for people to meet and play sport irrespective of their race or political views. Indeed the equality of all people no matter what their race, religion or sexual orientation is embodied in the statutes of the federation. Irrespective of our own personal views on this and other issues, the EHF as an institution is not in a position to allow such statements during matches and events including the EHF EURO.”
