“FIREMAN”: Momir Ilic overtakes HSG Wetzlar immediately

Momir Ilić will take over as head coach of the German club, HSG Wetzlar, immediately, instead of at the start of the new season as originally planned. The unwritten rule that teams tend to perform poorly when they know their coach is leaving at the end of the season proved true once again for this Bundesliga team. A 30:18 defeat in Leipzig was the tipping point. The eighth loss in nine matches forced the club’s management to act quickly in order to prevent the season from ending on a negative note. Franka Karstens and his assistant, Filip Kuzmanovski, will be replaced by the former Veszprém coach.

Until the end of the season, he will receive daily support from Jasmin Čamdžić, the sports director of HSG Wetzlar.

“The sporting performance in recent weeks has not been in line with the standards we expect as a club. We have six matches left this season, and we want to finish this season successfully. We owe it to our sponsors, partners, fans, and ourselves. That is why we have been forced to take this step, hoping to get a positive impulse for the end of the season,” said Čamdžić.

“We simply have to present ourselves better than we have in most of the recent weeks. We’ve had numerous discussions and openly analyzed the team’s performances together with the coaching staff. We came to the conclusion that a change in the head coach position is necessary,” Čamdžić added.

On the upcoming task with the new coach, Čamdžić said: “We are very happy that Momir Ilić is immediately ready to take on this role. The upcoming international break gives him the opportunity to work intensively with the team and to prepare them specifically for the final stretch of the season.”
