Following Lazarov’s Footsteps: Hesham Joins Veszprém’s List of Legendary Goal Scorers

Ahmed Hesham’s twelve goals for Veszprém in the defeat against Sporting in the EHF Champions League last week prompted the Hungarian giant’s club statisticians to take a look back through history.
Since 1977, there have been 15 occasions when a Veszprém player has scored 12 or more goals on the international stage.
The record is held by the all-time top scorer of the EHF Champions League, Macedonian Kiril Lazarov, who scored 14 goals twice — on October 8, 2005, against Dinamo Baumit București and on October 7, 2006, against Považská Bystrica. Lazarov reached at least 12 goals in European competition four times in total (twice 14 and twice 12), making him the record holder ahead of Marko Vujin, who achieved that feat in three matches.
József Éles managed at least 12 goals in a match twice (against Riga and TBV Lemgo — in the latter, he scored an incredible 13 of his team’s 24 goals!), while Jenő Putics (13), Zlatko Saračević (12), Mirza Džomba (12), Carlos Pérez (13), Petar Nenadić (12), and Yahia Elderaa (12) each did it once.
Besides Hesham and Elderaa, two current squad members can also boast at least 10 goals in a Champions League match for Veszprém: Gašper Marguč in spring 2023 against Szeged, and Nedim Remili, who did it three times (against Porto, Füchse Berlin, and Fredericia).
