HØJ Elite appoints Anders Thomsen as men’s head coach until end of 2025/26 season
HØJ Elite has worked intensively in recent days to find a replacement for former head coach Stian Tønnesen, who stepped down from the club on Thursday. The club can now announce that Anders Thomsen will take over the role for the remainder of the season.
Anders Thomsen most recently served as head coach of Ribe-Esbjerg’s men’s team, and according to Lars Vinther, CEO of HØJ Elite, he brings exactly the experience the players need right now:
“Anders has great expertise in taking on tasks that match the situation we are in right now. He also took over at Ribe-Esbjerg in the middle of a season and did so successfully. In addition, Anders brings strong commitment, high energy, and clarity—qualities the players and staff need. At the same time, he knows the conditions in the Danish Men’s League and can immediately tailor the sporting efforts so they reflect the challenges we face for the rest of the season,” says Lars Vinther, and continues:
“It is important for us to emphasize that our objective for this season is to establish ourselves in the league. We view the season as a whole and want to get the team back on the right track so that we are well prepared for the final matches of the season. The players, of course, also carry a great responsibility to bring the right attitude, and it is our clear perception that the willingness is there.”
Anders Thomsen has, for now, been appointed head coach of HØJ Elite until the end of the 2025–2026 season. His first task will be on Wednesday, when the league team faces Skjern Håndbold away from home. In addition to his coaching role at Ribe-Esbjerg, Anders Thomsen has previously been head coach at Lemvig-Thyborøn and Mors-Thy in the Men’s League. He also holds an EHF Master Coach coaching license and has several years of experience in talent development in Danish handball.
At the same time, HØJ Elite will begin the process of finding a coaching setup from next season onward.
