Maik Machulla will lead Aalborg

47-year-old Maik Machulla had a long career as an active player in the German Bundesliga, including with SC Magdeburg, while his career stopped at HSG Nordhorn in 2010, where Machulla acted as playing coach.

Since then, coaching led him to SG Flensburg-Handewitt, where he took over the role of head coach in the summer of 2017. Subsequently, it resulted in two German championships in 2018 and 2019, as well as two silver medals in 2020 and 2021, before the parties parted ways in April 2023.

– In our search for a new coach, we have primarily focused on getting an experienced man in the post, which has been successful, as Maik comes to the club after many years in the strong German Bundesliga, just as he also has extensive experience from the Champions League -participation with Flensburg-Handewitt.

– In addition, as a coach, he is known for an offensive, crowd-friendly style of play, which you can also expect to see in the Sparekassen Danmark Arena from the coming season, says Aalborg Handball director Jan Larsen.

– We have previously had success with foreign coaches in Aalborg Handball and although Maik will be the first German coach in the club, via his time as coach in Flensburg-Handewitt he has a very Scandinavian approach to things, which we are convinced will harmonize well with our identity and squad, Jan Larsen continues.

Maik Machulla himself is also looking forward to the upcoming collaboration.

– I am naturally very much looking forward to getting started in Aalborg, where I look forward to becoming part of one of the most progressive clubs in the world, seen over the past five years. There is an exciting pool of players to work with and my goal is that together we can win more titles for the club and further develop Aalborg Handball as a fixture at the top of European club handball, says Maik Machulla,

– In Aalborg Handball, I hope to be able to contribute with my experience, new inspirations and understanding of handball. The conditions, the motivation of the employees and high-quality players give us the opportunity to achieve our goals together. I’m really looking forward to stepping onto the fantastic home pitch with the team in front of the terrific home crowd, adds Machulla.

Maik Machulla has signed a two-year contract with Aalborg Handball effective from 1 July.
