Tears, Applause, and Four Goals: The Miracle of Camilla Herrem

From the greatest athletes come the greatest stories. The handball world was left shocked by the announcement of the famous Norwegian, Camilla Herrem, this June when she revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, requiring chemotherapy treatments. And just three months later, the woman who has won everything with her national team stunned the world again—this time in a positive way.
Just five days after her final chemotherapy session, Camilla Herrem returned to the court this weekend in the season opener between Sola and Oppsal. Despite fatigue and medical limitations, she wanted to stand by her teammates at the start of the new season.
“It was a wave of emotions,” she said through tears, after returning to competition to the ovations of more than a thousand spectators.
First match only 5 days after therapy
She started right away in the lineup and played the entire game, scoring four goals—once again demonstrating her fighting spirit and technical precision. Her husband and coach, Steffen Stegavik, revealed that the decision for her to play was made that very morning, as she had responded exceptionally well to the treatment.
This comeback goes far beyond sport. It reflects the strength of character of an athlete who refuses to let illness define her life. The next challenge is the Champions League, with Podravka from Koprivnica as the first opponent. Everyone hopes Camilla will be ready for what lies ahead…
