A Star Is Born: Marcos Fis Lights Up Herning at EHF EURO 2026
Spain’s national team were left without any chance of reaching the semi-finals of EHF EURO 2026 after losing to Denmark 31:36. Jordi Ribera’s side, as expected, have been far from their best this winter — something confirmed by Spain’s third defeat in Herning, following earlier losses to Germany and Norway.
A generational transition is underway, and one of the bright spots at this tournament has been Marcos Fis, the jewel of Spain’s 2006/2007 generation. Initially the third option in his position behind Garsiaandia and Dujshebaev, he has stepped into the spotlight with a series of strong performances.
The teenager — who will celebrate his 19th birthday on April 1 — scored an impressive nine goals in defeat against the best team on the planet, in front of 15,000 loud home supporters, showing he has the talent for the biggest stage.
Fis was also named MVP at the IHF Men’s Youth World Championship in Egypt last August.
He is another product of a handball family: his father Julio was part of Spain’s silver-medal generation at EHF EURO 1996 and won the EHF Champions League as a player with Ciudad Real. Cuban genes clearly suit a sport like handball.
