Ohrid Add Champions League Experience with Dominik Mathe

The top ambitions of HC Ohrid clearly do not end with the current season, as was already announced last year, and the latest signing set to arrive at “Biljanini Izvori” next summer only confirms it. It is Hungary international Dominik Mathe, who will join the Macedonian Super League side after the end of cooperation with Norwegian club Elverum, Balkan-Handball.com has learned.

The 27-year-old right back already has four seasons in the EHF Champions League behind him, having played with the Scandinavian side as well as Paris Saint-Germain, where he was under contract from 2022 to 2024. Máté developed as a player in Balatonfüredi and, as one of the most talented left-handed players of his generation in Europe, began his journey abroad — first to Elverum, then to Paris, before returning once again to Norway, where he has scored 29 goals so far this season in the EHF European League. Overall, he has netted 240 goals on the international stage while playing for three clubs.

The path of the 201 cm tall Hungarian was supposed to lead to Poland. His strong performances earned him a three-year contract with Kielce (2024–2027) after his spell at PSG, and he was presented as a major project for the future and a replacement for Alex Dujshebaev. However, the move never materialized due to a recurring knee injury suffered for the second time at the EHF EURO 2024 and a lengthy recovery that lasted 11 months. He decided to return to Norway in order to regain confidence and the chance to play on the biggest stage — and that decision paid off.

He made his debut for the Hungarian national team at the 2019 World Championship as a 19-year-old.

Mathe arrives in Ohrid in the prime of his career. The club had been searching for a marquee signing at right back for a long time, and in the end the choice fell on the Hungarian ace, who will take over a position currently shared this season by domestic players Jagurinovski and Savrevski. If the plans to form a regional league come to fruition, and if the club secures qualification for the EHF European League, there is no doubt that Máté’s experience and quality will play a vital role in the further development of the team led by Serbian coach Boris Rojević.
