Polish team set off to Spanish Oviedo on Thursday in order to take part in a friendly tournament but before their departure coach Michael Biegler presented the final squad for the Qatari World Championships. Most of his choices were hardly surprising, however, the absence of experienced right winger Patryk Kuchczyński may have been unexpected. For now Biegler also has to manage without injured Bartłomiej Jaszka but on the other hand he was able to include Piotr Wyszomirski who got injured during the Christmas Cup in Katowice but the injury didn’t turn out to be as serious as it had seemed. The coach has one new addition to the team, it is right back Andrzej Rojewski who decided to play for Poland. For the past years Krzysztof Lijewski didn’t have equally valuable alternate and now presence of Rojewski seems to solve the problem.
Biegler said that their first goal would be getting through the group phase. He finds Group D quite hard and he is not really fond of the fact that Poland is a part of this group. The players don’t feel any unnecessary pressure and claim they know very well what they are capable of.
Poland passed the first test which was Christmas Cup in December – the team beat Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia and won the tournament. Now, after a tough preparation time, in Oviedo they are going to face much more difficult rivals – Spain, Norway and Hungary in their best squad.
Poles are going to open their Championships next Friday with the match against Germany – the team they beat twice in eliminations to the very same tournament and yet they are to face them again after all.
