Gummersbach signs Swedish mega talent Nikola Roganović

VfL Gummersbach has taken an important step in its long-term sporting strategy by securing the services of Swedish backcourt shooter Nikola Roganović for the 2026/27 season. The 19-year-old has signed a three-year contract until 2029 with the club from the Oberberg region.
“Nikola is an enormous talent,” emphasized his future head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson. “We are very happy that a player of his quality has chosen us, and we are looking forward to the future together. He will fit perfectly into our team.”
VfL managing director Christoph Schindler added:
“We are very proud that Nikola has decided to join VfL Gummersbach. It’s no secret that he is one of the biggest and most promising handball talents in the world and was highly sought after. It’s great that we and our fans will see him in our jersey next year.”
Roganović joins from the Swedish top-flight club HK Malmö, where he moved last summer together with his father and coach Zoran Roganović.
Sigurdsson highlighted:
“Nikola is a very versatile player who can play both offensively on left back and center back, as well as in defense on several positions.”
Over the past year, Roganović has developed into one of the most sought-after young handball players in the world in his age group. A year ago, he played a key role in Sweden’s gold medal at the U18 European Championship, scoring six goals in the final against Denmark and 53 goals overall, making him Sweden’s top scorer and being named MVP of the tournament.
He also received the Hans Vestberg Handball Scholarship from the Swedish Handball Federation, created to support promising young players.
In spring, Roganović made his debut for the Swedish senior national team, scoring against Norway. At the U19 World Championship in the summer, where Sweden finished fourth, he confirmed his reputation by earning a place in the All-Star Team.
In the current season, Roganović has already recorded 64 goals and 44 assists in eight matches in the Swedish league.
Speaking about his transfer, the young back said:
“I am very happy to join VfL Gummersbach next season and play in front of these wonderful fans. I love the culture and atmosphere that this club has, especially in the SCHWALBE arena. I’m really looking forward to playing there with my future teammates.”
