Porto and Sporting trade explosive statements after controversial handball derby

The aftermath of Sporting away 33:30 win over FC Porto in Saturday’s Portuguese handball derby has been dominated by a fierce exchange of official statements, after Sporting accused the home club of a new series of unacceptable incidents surrounding the match at Dragão Arena.
Sporting CP published a strongly worded statement in which it described FC Porto’s recent conduct as “absolutely repugnant” and announced it would urgently request a meeting with Portugal’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport. The Lisbon club argued that these episodes damage the image of Portuguese sport and demanded severe punishment for those responsible.
In its statement, Sporting claimed that the latest and most serious incident occurred before the match, when the visiting dressing room allegedly contained a “toxic and intense smell” that affected the physical condition of players and staff. Sporting said the situation was so serious that coach Ricardo Costa and pivot Christian Moga were unable to take part, after both required medical assistance and were taken to hospital.
Sporting also said it formally opposed the match being played under those circumstances, but was informed that the necessary conditions were in place for the game to go ahead. The team therefore entered the court under protest, despite, according to the club, being deprived of its coach and one of its players.
FC Porto responded with an equally firm denial. In an official statement, the club said it “absolutely, clearly and unequivocally” rejected the reports of any incident involving “intense odors” in the away dressing room, calling the accusations serious, abusive, and entirely unfounded.
The Porto club said it immediately contacted the Portuguese Handball Federation to deny the allegations and also called the Public Security Police so the conditions in the visitors’ dressing room could be independently verified. Porto also declared itself available, with federation authorization, to allow accredited media to inspect the facilities directly.
While rejecting all responsibility, Porto acknowledged that emergency services were called when some Sporting members felt unwell, insisting that all necessary assistance was provided with professionalism and responsibility.
The controversy has now completely overshadowed Porto’s 33:30 victory, with the derby turning into one of the most heated off-court disputes in recent Portuguese handball memory. It remains to be seen whether the federation or public authorities will now take further steps following the accusations and denials from both clubs.
