Portugal coach Paulo Pereira: This victory is for Miguel

In their opening match of the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship, Portugal secured a commanding victory over the United States with a final score of 30-21.

Despite the absence of their central player, Miguel Martins, due to doping suspension, Portugal demonstrated depth and resilience. Coach Paulo Pereira commented on the situation, stating, “We find solutions with other players who are available. This victory was for him.”, stated for TV2.no.

Sporting player Salvador Salvador also expressed the team’s sentiments: “When you lose a teammate, it’s always difficult to play. It could have been him or any one of us. It’s really tough. To play a good championship, everyone needs to be fit. But that’s just how it is.”

Portugal’s next challenge is against Brazil on Friday, followed by a match against co-hosts Norway on Sunday. These upcoming games are crucial as the team aims to maintain their momentum in the tournament.
