Serbia with three teams in Europe 2020/2021: Equation with all unknowns

Serbian handball will be represented with three teams in European cups 2020/2021. Only RK Zeleznicar Nis will join EHF European League, while reigning champions RK Vojvodina, RK Dinamo Pancevo and RK Metaloplastika Sabac have decided to miss the upcoming season. In women’s handball, champions ZORK Jagodina and third best team ZRK Naisa will join European Cups.

RK Vojvodina director Darko Jevtic has explained for Balkan-Handball.com why the seventh time in a row Serbian champions have decided to focus on domestic Championship and SEHA Gazprom League:

  • RK Vojvodina, as the largest club in the country, must take care of survival. We live in a time of pandemic where we are postponing the beginning of preparations for the third time. As serious people, we cannot make a budget projection for this season, nor revenues, nor expenses. In that equation where all the unknowns are, except the will and desire to play, we do not know the other parameters. We have taken the position to miss playing in Europe. The SEHA league is very questionable, although the people from SEHA are still struggling, they are still optimistic. We hope that we will be able to organize that competition, however, all the difficulties, the uncertainty of the trip, the number of tests that would ensure the safety of the players and participants in the matches are clear. This year, as far as sports, in general, are concerned, is extremely questionable when all possible competitions are in question – said Jevtic.
