“THINK BIG”: VFL Gummersbach plan COMEBACK to Lanxess Arena

Lanxess Arena was a home for VFL Gummersbach in some of the most existing moments of historical club in XXI Century.

Between 2009 and 2011, the legendary German team won Cup Winners Cup and EHF Cup trophies three seasons in a row, playing also EHF Champions League, attention was huge so the host place of big matches was the “handball cathedral” famous for EHF Champions League Final4 events, an hour drive from Gummersbach.

Lead by Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, VFL Gummersbach again playing an important role in German Bundesliga after they were relegated in 2019. The five-time EHF Champions League (Champions Cup) winners are currently at position No. 7 in Bundesliga which is the way to the comeback to European level soon.

Attention for matches is higher, so “Schwalbe Arena” with a capacity of 4.132 seats was seven times sold-out during the current season.

The club plans to move some important matches to Cologne again. The first match which will be played in season 2024/2025 at Lanxess Arena will be derby against possible champion Fuchse Berlin on December 26.
