Three-Year Deal: Alex Dujshebaev to Join Gummersbach Next Summer

VfL Gummersbach has pulled off a special transfer coup for next summer by securing the services of handball star Alex Dujshebaev. The Spanish international will join the club from the 2026/27 season on a contract of at least three years.

“I’m incredibly happy and at the same time proud that we were able to sign Alex for VfL Gummersbach,” said VfL managing director Christoph Schindler. “There’s certainly no need to mention the qualities Alex brings. He will be an extremely important factor for our direction in the coming years. As captain of Kielce and the Spanish national team, he brings maximum leadership and experience — something our young players in particular will benefit from immensely. Beyond the sporting quality we gain with him, it is also a clear statement about where we want to go as a club. I’m already looking forward, just like every VfL fan, to seeing Alex in the VfL shirt next season.”

Dujshebaev comes from a world-famous handball family. His father Talant is a two-time World Handball Player of the Year and currently his head coach at the Polish top club KS Kielce, where his younger brother Daniel also plays. Alex Dujshebaev is regarded as one of the best right backs in the world, known for his game intelligence and leadership qualities. Both at club level and with the Spanish national team — which he has represented for twelve years — he has been one of the key performers. In addition to numerous domestic league titles and cup wins, the 33-year-old won the EHF Champions League with RK Vardar Skopje in 2017 and is, among other achievements, a two-time European champion with Spain. With his current club, Dujshebaev has reached the Champions League final twice.

“The Bundesliga can look forward to him,” promised VfL head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson. “This is a major transfer for us, for VfL, our fans, and the region. We are truly proud and happy to be able to bring in a player of Alex’s quality. We had excellent conversations with him. We’re delighted that he believes in our path and is ready to come to the Bundesliga. We expect him to make our game even faster and better.”

After nine years in Kielce, Gummersbach will become the left-hander’s sporting home from next summer. Dujshebaev himself is looking ahead to the new chapter with great anticipation.

“I’m extremely proud to join a club with such a history and to be part of an ambitious project in the Bundesliga — the best league in the world,” said Dujshebaev. “A key factor in my decision were the talks with Goggi and Christoph Schindler. I’m ready to give everything for this club so that we can achieve our goals, grow, and develop together.”
