Toni Gerona wants Main Round with Japan: We are 2 steps back with only 8 players from Olympic squad

Japanese handball team will compete Sweden, Spain and Chile at Preliminary Round of the Men’s World Handball Championship 2025.

Handball-Planet.com editor Zika Bogdanovic has talked with Japanese NT coach Toni Gerona about his start in Asia, advantages and challenges on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

  • At this World Championship we will have only 8 players from the Olympic squad. Some of them are injured and they are injured because they don’t play at proffessional teams in Japan, Yasuhira and Yoshida want to be paid for playing in the NT. I tried to explain them “guys, this is national team”. However, they are young and I hope they will change their mind. We have 10 players in the squad with no international experience. I can say, team is 2 steps back in terms of quality and experience in comparation with the one who compete at Olympics 2024 – said Gerona.

Japan has been seen as a team who will qualify for the Main Round of the World Championship 2025 to finish as third best non-European nation.
