VfL Gummersbach and Miro Schluroff together until 2029

VfL Gummersbach has taken an important step for the future of its Bundesliga team. The club from the Oberberg region has extended the contract of German national player Miro Schluroff—originally set to run until 2026—by three more years, now lasting until 2029. “I’m incredibly happy that we’ve extended Miro’s contract,” said VfL managing director Christoph Schindler. “Miro has delivered outstanding performances over the past few months, especially in recent weeks. I’m confident that Miro will play a key role not only for VfL Gummersbach but also for the German national team in the coming years. Especially with Julian leaving, even more responsibility will fall on Miro’s shoulders, and I’m sure he’ll more than rise to the occasion.”

Schluroff joined Gummersbach in the summer of 2022 from Minden and has developed impressively since then. Particularly in the current season, the 25-year-old has made a significant breakthrough as a regular starter and key player for VfL Gummersbach. Over the course of the season, Schluroff was entrusted with increasing responsibility, which he embraced impressively. Thanks to his surge in performance—especially during the second half of the season—he gained nationwide attention and was called up to the German national team for the first time in March by head coach Alfred Gislason. He made a strong debut in two matches against Austria. In addition, he was named the best player of the month in the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga in March.

“It’s fantastic that Miro is staying with us, and we’re really looking forward to the future with him,” said VfL head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson about the contract extension. “We’ve always known that Miro is a huge talent with the potential to become a top player, but this season he’s made massive progress, developed into a true key player and national team member, and is delivering consistently strong performances.” Schluroff himself also commented on his decision to stay: “I’m incredibly happy to have extended my contract in Gummersbach, and I’m sure it’s the right step. I believe we’re far from finished with this team, the club, and the city—and I’m really looking forward to the journey ahead!”
