Wolff after Germany’s opening win: “Maybe the words weren’t right — but I’m against 7-on-6”

Germany’s top star Andreas Wolff was relaxed and satisfied after his team’s first victory at EHF EURO 2026. The Kiel goalkeeper spoke after the 30:27 (12:8) win over Austria — and also addressed his “anti-handball” comment about Austria’s 7-on-6 style, which had caused a stir in the handball world in recent days.

“I don’t know if it was really nice to watch, but the win is what matters. What I said before the tournament still stands: 7-on-6 is not my favourite, and I don’t enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy the first half, but my guys played very strong defence. With what we showed in the first 60 minutes of the tournament, I can be satisfied — it gives us hope for the next matches.”

His “anti-handball” statement was widely echoed. After the reactions it caused, does he still stand by it — did he go too far?

“Maybe the right words weren’t chosen, but it was a bit of joking around with Nikola Bilyk in Kiel’s dressing room. That’s definitely not how I see the sport, and as long as I play, I will be against 7-on-6.”

Next up for Germany is Serbia…

“Serbia have an excellent goalkeeper duo in Milosavljev and Cupare. They also have experienced players like Kukić and Đukić. It will be a tough match for us. They showed character against Spain — they came back and almost equalised. We have to stay focused for all 60 minutes,” Wolff was clear.

7 against 6 is the worst and injust thing in handball history.
