Xavi Pascual: Aalborg deserved the win after our missed chances

Hungarian Veszprém started the EHF Champions League with a defeat. Danish Aalborg was better than Xavi Pascual’s team, winning 31:28, and the first away match of the new season showed that there is still a lot of work ahead for the Spanish coach in his attempt to lead the Hungarian giant to the Final4 in Cologne 2026.

  • I think we fought from the start, but we couldn’t find the rhythm. In the first half we missed a lot of shots, easy chances from the line – and that punished us. We missed four or five clear chances like that. But the team struggled. Defensively, we had problems at the start against Arnoldsen and Hoxer: we tackled them, but we weren’t aggressive enough. We started the second half well, but the same thing happened again: we missed a lot of shots and made stupid mistakes with passes at key moments – we sold them or spoiled them. And unfortunately that was enough to decide the game. I think Aalborg deserved the win – said Xavi Pascual after defeat.

Aalborg coach Simon Dahl:

  • I think our defense and speed were very good today despite the physical attack of our opponent. Especially in the first half we had very good runs and counterattacks, but we were able to keep the pace, the level and limit the technical errors throughout in a fantastic atmosphere. When we play at home, on our home field, we are really very good.
