Just as his transfer from Pick Szeged to Barcelona in the summer of 2026 became a media reality, Icelandic handball master Janus Smárason will have to step away from the court—how long remains unknown.
In the Hungarian vice-champions’ 30:34 defeat against Tatabánya, the former Magdeburg playmaker suffered a knee injury that is being assessed as a more serious one.
If Smárason’s season is indeed over, coach Apelgren will be forced to significantly shorten his rotation and rely on the duo Gottfridsson–Kukić.
Serbia playmaker Lazar Kukić is still not fully recovered from knee injury and has yet to contribute in competitive matches.
