THW Kiel suffer major blow: Emil Madsen out until the end of the year

THW Kiel will have to do without their top scorer of last season, Emil Madsen, for the remainder of 2025. The 24-year-old Danish left back has been diagnosed with cartilage damage in his right knee, a late consequence of an injury sustained during pre-season camp.
According to team doctor Philip Lübke, a conservative rehabilitation plan was chosen in consultation with Danish national team doctors, with no surgery planned. “We want to make sure Emil’s knee recovers in the most sustainable way possible so his long career won’t be affected,” Lübke said.
Head coach Filip Jicha described the loss as “brutal,” noting that he now only has Harald Reinkind as an experienced left-handed option. Despite the shortage, Kiel’s managing director Viktor Szilagyi ruled out any short-term signings, stressing the club will monitor Madsen’s progress closely.
Kiel are already missing long-term absentees Gonzalo Perez de Vargas and Hendrik Pekeler, making the Danish star’s injury another serious setback in their push for trophies.
