“Enemies” in the Arena, Teammates in the Sky: Kiel and Flensburg Fly Together to DHB Cup

The biggest derby in German handball is played in the north, when THW Kiel and SG Flensburg Handewitt meet. The rivalry is huge, but sometimes circumstances bring them together. The giants of the North will travel on the same charter flight from Sønderborg to the south of Germany, where their DHB Cup Round of 16 matches await. Kiel visits HBW Balingen, while Flensburg plays against TBV Stuttgart.

The joint trip was arranged due to the tight schedule and the late return of players from national team duties. This way, the players get better preparation, and both clubs save money — they share the flight costs and avoid hotel overnight stays.

Flensburg director Holger Glandorf explains:

“It was important for us to provide the best possible preparation for our players for these crucial cup matches under the circumstances.”

In addition, the clubs split the travel budget:

“The costs of the charter flight are shared, and hotel expenses are avoided.”

The two rivals also shared a charter flight back in 2020 before the Super Cup.
