Gasper Marguc is back to RK Celje Pivovarna Lasko

Powerful reinforcement for Zlatorog.

With the new season, after more than ten years, one of the most recognizable Slovenian handball players of the last decade is returning to Celje – Gašper Marguč. A long-time key figure of Hungary’s Veszprém, one of the best right wings in the world and a product of the Celje handball school. His return sends an exceptionally strong message: a player with more than 3,000 senior-level goals is coming back to Zlatorog.

A player with an outstanding pedigree and numbers that speak for themselves

Gašper Marguč began his journey in Celje, where between 2009 and 2014 he made 200 appearances and scored 949 goals. He established himself very young as one of the most explosive Slovenian players, which took him in 2014 to Hungarian powerhouse Veszprém – one of Europe’s biggest clubs and a member of the absolute handball elite.
In twelve seasons with the club he scored as many as 1,653 goals, which places him 6th on the club’s all-time scoring list – an achievement that underlines his consistency, quality and ability to perform at the highest level.

In the Slovenian national team jersey he recorded 134 caps and 459 goals. In the EHF Champions League, he is among the TOP 20 all-time scorers.
Overall, at club and national team level, he has surpassed the 3,000-goal mark.

The return of a Celje homegrown star

Marguč, a 35-year-old from Celje, has often gladly returned to Zlatorog, whether due to Champions League clashes or as a fan and supporter of his “home” club – and an extra emotional layer was added by the fact that he also supported his two younger brothers in doing so: Gal Marguč, who also wore the Celje jersey a few years ago, and his brother Mai Marguč, 17 years younger, who is earning his place in Celje’s senior team as one of the key figures of the squad.

The return to Celje is therefore even more emotional because Marguč will, for the first time in his career, play alongside his younger brother Mai, who is 17 years younger. Celje thus gains one of the most unique handball tandems in the history of Slovenian sport.

Gašper Marguč on returning to Celje:

“I am very happy to be returning to my home club. The story of my return unfolded very quickly – only a few days passed from the first contact to the meeting. I was convinced by the club’s ambitions and vision, which were shared with me by the president and the director. I saw myself in that story and the decision was not difficult. I also think in a similar way – I am coming back maximally motivated and ambitious. My inner feeling tells me I made the right decision and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. I am returning to the environment where it all began. But this time in a different role – back then I was among the youngest in the team, and now I will be able to help others with experience, knowledge and advice. Playing for Veszprém shaped me as a player and as a person. And I truly look forward to being able to help others now, and above all the team in achieving its goals. It means a lot to me that I will play together with my younger brother Mai. I never even imagined that this would happen in my career, so it gives me additional motivation for my return to my home club. In Celje, the temple of Slovenian handball, I want to win, fight for all domestic trophies and secure a place in Europe. I believe in my future teammates – Celje’s team is young, full of potential and talent. It will be wonderful to step onto the home court again, in front of the Florijani, to wear the Celje jersey again. I can’t find all the words to describe how excited I am about this return.”
