Golla wants Flensburg return – Melsungen demand €1.5 million

Only a few months after returning to MT Melsungen, Johannes Golla could already be on the move again.

The Germany captain, who left SG Flensburg-Handewitt this summer after eight years in the north, has reportedly asked Melsungen to consider an early end to his contract as his family now wants to return to Flensburg.

It would be another unexpected twist in the career of the 28-year-old line player, who signed a long-term deal with Melsungen running until 2031.

“Johannes approached us with the wish to terminate his contract early. His family would like to return to Flensburg. In principle, we respect that wish, but of course it is not quite that simple,” MT sporting director Jesper Larsson told Bild.

Golla’s move to Melsungen had itself been largely influenced by family considerations, but the adjustment to life away from Flensburg has apparently proved more difficult than expected.

At the end of August, Golla had already spoken publicly about the challenge facing his wife and two children after leaving the city where the family had spent eight years.

“Our children were born there and had their whole environment there,” Golla explained at the time.

Now, a return to Flensburg as early as the summer of 2027 is reportedly being discussed.

Such a move, however, would come at a significant price.

According to Bild, Melsungen could demand a transfer fee of at least €1.5 million for the German national team captain.

Flensburg already have several options at the line position. Arnar Freyr Arnarsson’s contract expires next summer, Blaz Blagotinsek is tied to the club until 2028, while current captain Emil Bergholt has a deal running until 2029.

Golla originally moved from Melsungen to Flensburg in 2018 and developed into one of the leading line players in world handball.

During his time with SG, he won the German Bundesliga title in 2019 and lifted the EHF European League trophy in both 2024 and 2025.

At international level, Golla has made 121 appearances for Germany and scored 419 goals. He won Olympic silver in 2024 and added another silver medal at the 2026 European Championship.
