DINAMO BUCHAREST – CSM BUCHAREST 25-23 (13-11)

11 years is a long time. In sports it’s almost an eternity. This is how long the Red Bulldogs of DINAMO Bucharest had to wait to celebrate a new championship title!Monday night on their home court they clinched the second victory against CSM Bucharest and became the new Romanian champions. But it was not at all an easy ride. DINAMO had to fight all the way to the end to secure their 13th championship title and only the second in 11 years!

Like in the first game, DINAMO had another storming start and after only eight minutes they were leading 6-1! It took CSM more than ten minutes to score their second goal! Still, for the next twelve minutes, the Red Bulldogs stayed in front with 3-4 goals as the Tigers of CSM were perplex to the variety of combinations DINAMO pulled out of their portfolio: wing shots, balls for the pivot, crosses and one on one penetrations at the 9 meters line. In defense, the player with 10 hearts, IbrahimaDiaw was the Red Bulldogs undisputed “minister of defense” blocking most of the combinations of CSM. It was Javier Humet, CSM’s right back, who closed the gap at only two goals with some well placed far distance shots: 9-7 in the 24th minute and the Blue Tigers were back in business.

The last five minutes of the first half showed both teams managing to score withmuch ease from the 9 meters line and the Red Bulldogs went to the locker room two goals ahead. Everything was on the table for the last 30 minutes of the finals!

CSM had a better start of the 2nd half and they managed to level the score: 13-13 after only two minutes! It was now DINAMO’s time to react. Out of this battle of the nerves came the most beautiful part of the game: between the 32nd and the 40th minute the two teams head to head, none of them being able to put some distance of the score board. One minute later, The Red Bulldogs were penalized with a two minutes suspension and CSM went ahead for the first time: 17-18. It seemed that the chance was finally smiling to the Tigers who looked to be in control of the game. But the Red Bulldogs had a different idea and they reacted in great style: strong defense, beautiful pivot goal and a two minutes suspension for the Tigers. The final turned again in DINAMO’s favor: 21-20 in the 46th minute after another pivot goal, but this handball thriller was far from over. The score board froze as neither of the two teams were able to score for almost seven minutes. The third shot attempt of a passive attack was successful and the Red Bulldogs were in control again: 22-20 in the 53rd minute. Another steal, fastbreakand DINAMO goes 3 goals ahead, while CSM looked unable to stand the pressure of the last crunching minutes of the game.

On the other side, DINAMO was sharp, focused and inspired. When Jakov Vrankovic, who had a fantastic game on both ends of the court, stormed through the CSM’s defense and scored the 25th goal in was clear for everybody that celebration time came for the Red Bulldogs. It ended 25-23 and DINAMO Bucharest became Romanian champions again. After eleven years!

DINAMO’s strong 9 meters line, the fighting spirit and the incredible defense was the decisive factor of the final. Diaw, Vrankovic, Savenco and Mousavi formed an iron wall ready to “move mountains” if needed to block their opponents. We must also mention the incredible DINAMO fans who put an incredible pressure on the opponents and helped their team in the difficult moments.

For the Blue Tigers of CSM Bucharest it was the second defeat in a row in the Romanian finals (last season they lost to Baia Mare). They showed a lot determination and character but it was not enough to win against DINAMO this season. The Red Bulldogs was a very strong nut, too tough to be cracked by ZvonkoSundovsky’s boys. But CSMbecame very fast a force to be reckoned with and, for sure, they will be even stronger next season and they will come back with a vengeance.

DINAMO will play next season in Champions League but the team needs some strongtransfers to stand any chance in the top competition of EHF.
