Lekic and Cvijic to play for Serbia again!

Serbian women’s national team is in series of bad results since 2021 when Slovenian coach Uros Bregar overtook that position.

In the last three events (Women’s EHF EURO 2022 and 2024, World Championship 2023), Serbian team had 1-11 score with only success against Chile at WCh 2023 and 11 defeats against European teams.

Serbian Handball Federation reacted after the last fail at Women’s EHF EURO 2024 when girls lost all three matches by sacking Uros Bregar.

Although the new coach isn’t promoted, the news from Serbia is that two biggest stars of women’s handball, Andrea Lekic and Dragana Cvijic will join team once again after 3-4 years break.

Duo from Hungarian FTC will help the team to qualify for the Women’s World Championship 2025.

The rival in the Play-Off is Slovenia.

– The biggest emotion I can have is towards the jersey with the national coat of arms. I am glad that we are here again, thank you to the Federation for the invitation, and of course, whenever they invite me, I will accept to play for the national team, which is truly sacred. I had not been invited before and it was not easy to watch the team in the past years, as well as the results it achieves. A difficult period awaits us, Slovenia has a strong team, they are the favorites in these matches, but we hope for the best outcome and I am glad that handball is being written about again in a positive sense. I am coming with a full heart, full of emotions and I hope that we will achieve a good result, that handball will be well written about again, that we will force children to come to this sport – said Andrea Lekić.

Dragana Cvijić has been playing in great form for several seasons and together with Andrea Lekić he forms the striking tandem of Ferencvaros.

– I am glad that I will play again in the jersey that I love the most and which is something special for me. The national team is sacred and I’m sorry that I had to miss some big competitions, actions, games because of some people who didn’t like me. Now I’m here, ready to help, I didn’t have a dilemma whether to play, it was never in question for me. It won’t be easy with Slovenia, which has a great team, but I believe we will manage to secure a place at the World Cup. That is the most important thing for our handball and that’s why everyone who can should help – said Dragana Cvijić.
