Ricardo Costa Extends Contract with Sporting CP Until 2030
Portuguese handball is in the best possible moment in the history after winning fourth place at World Championship 2025 in Oslo.
One of the protagonist, Ricardo Costa, father of two great youngstars Martim and Francisco Costa, extended his contract with Sporting CP until 2030, where he has five NT players under control.
In 2021, Ricardo Costa joined Sporting CP alongside his two sons, Martim and Francisco. Since then, the Lisbon-based club has won six titles and, for the first time in five years, qualified for the Champions League this season. After ten matches, Sporting CP stands in third place with 13:7 points, giving them a strong chance to skip the playoffs and advance directly to the quarterfinals.
New Contract Until 2030
“This contract extension makes me very happy, and I am very grateful for everything we have experienced in the past years. I am thankful for this opportunity and the trust placed in me, and I am excited about the greater responsibility entrusted to me. Alone, I am nothing, but together with them, we are very strong.“The challenge is to keep improving and winning. We have a very young team full of ambition to continue winning the competitions we have already won and to conquer new ones. We want to establish dominance in the league, reach the Final Four of the EHF Champions League – knowing how difficult that is – and compete for the Iberian Supercup, where we are getting closer to challenging FC Barcelona and hopefully winning it one day.”
Sporting CP’s sporting director, Miguel Afonso, highlighted how straightforward the extension was:
“It is an extension that makes me very happy and was very easy to arrange. When we spoke to Ricardo Costa about extending his contract, he simply asked what day and time he should sign. This shows how comfortable he feels here, that he feels at home, that he is happy, and that he is also very popular with the fans of Sporting CP.”
Francisco and Martim Costa, are the target of many TOP European teams but they have valid contract until summer 2027.
