Serbia and Toni Gerona part ways

Toni Gerona - EHF EURO 2024 in Munchen

Serbia and Toni Gerona parted ways after three and a half years of cooperation.

Spanish coach didn’t end Olympic cycle with the placement in Olympic qualification through EHF EURO 2024 in Germany, where Serbia ended last in the Group and took 19th place.

“After a detailed meeting with Gerona, we came to the conclusion that at this moment the mutual termination of the Contract is a compromise solution for both parties after the just completed Olympic cycle for the men’s senior national team of Serbia. We are grateful to Mr. Gerona for all the positive things he has done for men’s Serbian handball during his tenure and we wish him the best of luck in the future. The Serbian Handball Federation will comply with all legal obligations defined in the Agreement, the duration of which ends in June. Further decisions regarding the men’s senior national team will be made in due course in order to enter the World Cup play-offs ready.”

Antonio Gerona also had words of gratitude. “It is not easy to deal with this situation after the European Championship. We did not achieve our goal and it is understandable that the SHF needs new energy before everything that follows. I am grateful for everything and everyone in the previous period. I am most grateful to my family for their unreserved support. The colleagues I worked with in the coaching staff did their best and worked tirelessly all this time. I especially thank the players for their trust, desire and contribution, which was always maximal. I also thank all the people in Serbia who were with us, and I wish the new professional staff even more support and the best possible results.”

Gerona overtook position of the Serbian head-coach in June 2020. He lead the team to 14th place at EHF EURO 2022 and 11th at WCh 2023 in Poland.
