AALBORG HANDBOLD: Simon Dahl Named Permanent Head Coach, Henrik Kronborg Joins as Assistant

33-year-old Simon Dahl, who joined Aalborg Håndbold in the summer of 2023 from Nordsjælland Håndbold, has been confirmed as the club’s permanent head coach. Dahl initially took on the assistant coach role under then-head coach Stefan Madsen and continued in this position at the start of the current season. However, after the departure of Maik Machulla in early November 2024, Dahl stepped in as interim head coach—a role that has now been made permanent until June 30, 2027.
– “When Simon took over, we were in a somewhat turbulent period, but with 12 wins out of 12 heading into the winter break, he managed to stabilize things and prove his capabilities as a head coach. That’s why it didn’t take us long to decide to offer him the job on a permanent basis, which we are very excited about. He is skilled both tactically and in player management, and he fits perfectly into the culture we have built at Aalborg Håndbold over the years. That’s why I have no doubt that with Simon at the helm, we have found the right man for the job,” says director Jan Larsen.
Simon Dahl himself is thrilled about the new agreement.
– “First and foremost, I am proud but also humbled by the opportunity to become the permanent head coach of Aalborg Håndbold. Even though I have been wearing the head coach’s hat for the past few months, it was never a given that it would end up this way.
– I have always dreamed of becoming a head coach at a major club, and now that it has happened at Denmark’s biggest and most professional club, I am incredibly happy. My family and I feel very comfortable in the city, and I think we have a fantastic squad. I look forward to continuing the work we have started and hopefully adding even more trophies to the cabinet by the end of the season,” says Simon Dahl.
Simon Dahl as Head Coach and Henrik Kronborg as Assistant Coach
From the 2025/26 season, Dahl will be joined by a new assistant coach, as the Danish national team’s current assistant coach, Henrik Kronborg, takes over the role.
In addition to his national team experience, Kronborg brings a wealth of knowledge from his time with clubs such as Nordsjælland Håndbold, KIF Kolding København, Skjern Håndbold, and most recently HØJ Elite, where he has served as a sports consultant.
– “Henrik is an experienced coach who commands great respect for his expertise. He has seen and achieved a lot in the handball world, most recently contributing to significant successes with the Danish national team. We believe that together with Simon Dahl, he can form an optimal coaching duo, as both bring valuable skills to the team,” says Jan Larsen.
Henrik Kronborg will continue his role as assistant coach for the Danish men’s national team alongside his new position at Aalborg Håndbold.
For the remainder of the current season, the role of assistant coach at Aalborg Håndbold will be handled by U/19 coach Benjamin Batsberg, who has been filling in since November 2024.
