Ivano Balic: “It was roughly with Lino, but he was a leader, not me”

The best handball player of all time, Ivano Balic (31) reffered to rumuors that “he has major influence in Croatian national team during a years of sucess”. After Lino Cervar gave a quit (he is close to bench of Macedonia, but latest failure with Metalug in CL qualification can change everything), public in Croatia is a little bit sad, nostalgic and of course,  concerned about whether the series of success will continue with a new boss, Slavko Goluza, former national player, who was assistant of Cervar.

– Everyone chooses his way. Good luck. Our relation was rough. It was interesting to work with him, but more positive than negative things. From every experience, you leave smarter and healthier. I wasn’t a boss. I was playmaker, who normally has to lead team on the court. I am the one who is speaking at the field – said Balic and break earlier conclusions about relationships in Croatia national team during Cervar time.

Lino Cervar took Croatia before 2003 WC in Portugal, where they won gold medal. One year after, Croatia won gold at Olympic Games in Athens. After that, just once, Croatia didn’t reach semifinal on big events, but still waiting for another gold medals.
