Jakov Gojun to Retire at Season’s End: “I’d Love to Finish on a High”

The serious career of former Croatia international Jakov Gojun (39) is nearing its end. The imposing Split-born defender, whose handball CV is the envy of many, has announced that he will hang up his shoes after the current season, which he is playing in the jersey of RK Zagreb.

“I hope and believe we’ll all go through good, high-quality preparations and that we’ll stay healthy, which is the most important thing. In February and March we still have four Champions League matches ahead of us, and I think we’ll have something to say there — that we can take more points. Against Paris and Wisła we showed even away from home that we can compete, and now they’re coming to our Arena. The away games in Barcelona and at GOG will be challenging, but we’re looking forward to the chance to show what we can do. I think we’ve gained a quality reinforcement in the Egyptian, Abdou, and I believe we’re now a better and stronger team. As for the Croatian league and cup, our wish and our goal is to win the double crown. This is my last season, and I’d like it to end in a nice and positive spirit — and that at the end of May we can all celebrate together again,” said the captain of the Croatian champions, Jakov Gojun.

After Krilnik, Solin, Zamet and Siscia, Gojun joined RK Zagreb in 2009, before embarking on an outstanding international career with Atlético Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Füchse Berlin, until his return to the Croatian capital in 2021.

He made his national team debut at the famous 2009 World Championship, which featured the final between France and Croatia at Arena Zagreb. Years of success followed with the renowned generation led by the Olympic and world champions from 2003 and 2004.
