Mikael Appelgren to stay at Veszprem

One Veszprem have announced that Mikael Appelgren will stay at the club together with newcomer Emil Nielsen, who is coming from FC Barcelona.
“I already said at the pre-season press conference how difficult the situation is for players who sign 1+1-year contracts. They have an incredibly short time to prove that they are worth counting on in the long term. I am very happy that Mikael has proven with a series of excellent performances that we made the right decision when we signed him, and that he has continuously indicated that we can count on him in the future. Moreover, he has shown what an excellent person he is not only in matches and training sessions. He is one of the friendliest and most direct players in our squad, who has developed an excellent relationship not only with his teammates and staff, but also with the management, our youth players and our fans, everyone liked him very quickly. We really wanted him to stay, he wanted to stay too, so as a result of a joint and quick decision, he will be one of our goalkeepers in the 2026-2027 season,” said Dr. Csaba Bartha, CEO of Veszprém Handball Team Zrt. CEO.
“I am happy and proud to have this opportunity. I am really looking forward to continuing to work with this great club, staff and players. There is huge potential in the team, I don’t think we have shown it yet. We can be one of the best teams in the world, winning trophies. This fits my mentality perfectly. I want to win. I want to win every game, every training session, every title. I feel that the club wants the same thing, so we can support each other in achieving our goals,” said Mikael Appelgren, explaining the reasons for his extension.
This is Appelgren’s first season with our team, but he has already delighted us with excellent performances, such as his display in the championship match against Szeged or the away Champions League match against Kolstad. As previously announced, the Swedish legionnaire’s partner from next season will be Emil Nielsen, the Danish Olympic and World Champion goalkeeper. “Emil and Mikael will be an excellent pair, but until they come together next year, I have great confidence that Rodrigo Corrales and Appelgren will continue their excellent performance this season and will help us achieve our goals with many more saves,” said Dr. Csaba Bartha.
